Slop is the mean
Slop is AI output that falls to the average, because nobody pushed it anywhere else.
An AI model learns from what already exists. Ask it for a landing page, a logo or an opening line, and it gives you something near the middle of everything it has seen. That middle is often competent. It is also the same middle that everyone else gets.
Slop is not the same as bad work. It can be clean, correct and polished. You still recognize it, because you have seen it a thousand times.
People rarely choose this on purpose. They ask, they get something good enough, and they ship it. Each step feels reasonable. The result is work that could have come from anyone.
As AI improves, the mean improves too. So a better model does not end slop. It only moves the average up. The work that stands out is the work that left the average on purpose, because a person chose to take it somewhere.
