The medium is the message
The way an AI product lets you choose shapes what you think you can choose.
The models are amazing. The interfaces around them are mostly a chat box.
A chat box teaches you something without saying it. It teaches that a choice is a message, that options arrive as a short list, and that the only things you can make are things that fit in a back-and-forth.
Think about the choices that matter in real work. Between four brand directions, you need to see them side by side. Between opening sentences, you need to read each one in place. Across five hundred photos, you need to see them and drop the ones you do not want with one tap. A chat box does none of this well.
Even when an AI gives you options, the reasons are hard to see. You get a list and a recommendation. You do not get the facts to disagree with it.
So people stop disagreeing. The medium takes away the choice before the person ever notices that it was there.
Better models will not fix this. Better choice-making experiences will. Each kind of choice needs its own design.
